Torbay beaches have been recognised as being amongst the best in England and the entire UK.

You don’t need to take our word for it anymore.

Keep Britain Tidy, a charity, announced that of the 125 Seaside Awards, nationally, ten have been awarded in Torbay.

3 Blue Flags for Torbay Beaches

Of the ten Torbay beaches to of been awarded, three of them were also awarded the prestigious Blue Flag awards.

The lucky three beaches Meadfoot, Oddicome and Breakwater beach.

An amazing achievement for Torbay.

In total 65 beaches across the UK have been awarded a Blue Flag.

Of those 65 Blue Flag beaches, 26 of these are being flown right here in the South West.

The Lucky ten beaches

The ten beaches in Torbay to have won at the Seaside Awards are:

  1. Ansteys Cove
  2. Breakwater Beach (Blue Flag)
  3. Broadsands Beach
  4. Goodrington Beach
  5. Maidencombe Beach
  6. Meadfoot Beach (Blue Flag)
  7. Oddicombe Beach (Blue Flag)
  8. Paignton Beach
  9. Preston Sands
  10. Torre Abbey Sands

The Seaside Award is Keep Britain Tidy’s own award.

To be in with a chance of winning one, your beaches have to achieve the highest standards of beach management.

For bathing beaches, they need to meet the required mandatory standards for water quality.

Beaches have higher than average standards

To be in with a chance of getting the prestigious Blue Flag award you have to go that one step further.

Blue Flags are awarded to beaches exceed even the highest standards of management and water quality.

Beaches with Blue Flags must also comply with a number of criteria including environmental education and information, water quality and more.

Torbay’s Elected Mayor, Gordon Oliver said:

Winning ten Seaside Awards and three Blue Flag Awards is excellent news for the Bay. These awards really highlight the great work of our Resort Services team, who always ensure our visitors and residents alike can enjoy our wonderful beaches with the confidence that they are clean, well-managed and safe places to spend time and have fun.

I would also like to thank Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts for their support, which has meant we have been able to continue entering these awards. This enables us to continue to show that in Torbay we are at the forefront of beach management in the UK.

Keep Britain Tidy Said

Keep Britains CEO Allison Ogden-Newton concluded:

The success of the 148 beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded by both awards is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our beaches – from beach managers and volunteers to local people and businesses.

When you enjoy a trip to a beach flying an international Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country.
