Located on the Brunswick Street site, in Teignmouth town centre, the new £11million state-of-the art facility will bring GP services, and health and care and voluntary sector services under one roof.
GP services provided by the Channel View Medical Group will be based at the new centre together with community nurses, social workers, health and wellbeing teams, therapists, podiatry, audiology, physiotherapy and voluntary sector services.
The purpose built, facility designed by architects corstorphine-wright will also support the delivery of technology enabled care, helping more people live well within their local communities. Negotiations are continuing with Teignbridge District Council over the acquisition of the site which it owns.
Helen Ellkington, Associate Director, Strategic Estates and Governance, Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are pleased to share these images with the people of Teignmouth and surrounding areas following the submission of our full planning application for the new health and wellbeing centre.
“We are grateful to local residents who gave their views about our initial design and layout for the new centre over the summer. We have given their views careful consideration, they have influenced the designs and their comments are included in our submission for planning approval.
“Sustainability is very important to us and in line with our green plan, the whole building will be built to achieve a BREEAM Environmental Assessment rating of Very Good.”

“Our current surgery buildings are not fit for purpose as they are cramped, have limited access and have no further scope for expansion. This impacts on our ability to grow our team, to attract new GPs and other clinical staff. In addition, working under the same roof as community services and the voluntary sector will enable us to provide truly integrated care for our patient population”.
Liz Davenport, Chief Executive, Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, said: “While we recognise that there is still a very long way to go before construction can start on the new centre, with the submission of the full planning application we are one step closer to being able to offer seamless health and wellbeing services for local people in the heart of Teignmouth. We continue to work towards this while acknowledging the potential impact of economic uncertainty.
When the new health and wellbeing centre is built, a number of clinical services will move from the hospital into the new building while other clinical services will transfer to Dawlish community hospital or other sites. Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust will make sure that people are given plenty of notice of the date of any changes and will work closely with partners in Teignbridge District Council and the VCSE sector to address any issues around transport.
The new health and wellbeing centre for Teignmouth is being delivered via a joint venture partnership between gbpartnerships and Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, known as South Devon Health Innovation Partnerships (SDHIP).
