Jiu-Jitsu expert, Warrant Officer Trevor Horton, has raised £2,114 for the Ricky Grant Day Unit and the staff who treated his Army colleague and friend, Sergeant Chris Wotton, for cancer.

The Ricky Grant Day Unit at Torbay Hospital – which is run by Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust – is a haematology/oncology day centre providing chemotherapy and associated treatments, education and advice on an outpatient basis.

Chris, also a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, was diagnosed with cancer in September 2018.

Trevor was sponsored to conduct a gruelling 11-day self-defence challenge throughout the country to raise money for the haematology/oncology unit.

In order to support him and the ‘amazing work’ undertaken at Ricky Grant, Trevor spent each day grappling with self-defence adversaries at locations hundreds of miles apart, including Devon, Aldershot, Colchester, Leeds, Yarm, Darlington, Cardiff, Warrington and Bedfordshire.

Trevor described his challenge as extremely physical and mentally demanding and said: “If this challenge helps just one person to get an early diagnosis and raises further awareness of cancer, in my opinion it’s been a success.”

Trevor, of the Royal Army Physical Corps, and Chris Wotton, of 6 Rifles, recently attended a presentation ceremony at the Hospital to hand over the funds to staff at the Ricky Grant Day Unit.
