More than 300 cyclists set off from Newton Abbot College and braved the elements in support of Rowcroft Hospice on Sunday 13 October. Ride for Rowcroft offered two cycle options; the 24km route, now known as ‘The Classic’ and the more gruelling 32km course; ‘The Haytor Hill Climb’, which added an extra sense of challenge and adrenaline to the day.
These incredible fundraising efforts will help Rowcroft provide care and support to patients and families living with life limiting illnesses across South Devon. Organisers hope the hundreds of participants will have raised in excess of £30,000 to help fund Rowcroft’s vital services.
Connie Meek, 21 from Torquay took on the Haytor Hill Climb with her Dad. Connie explains why she decided to sign up and support the hospice:
“Last year, as a volunteer I had the privilege of filming the Ride for Rowcroft event, and I was so inspired, emotional and positively affected watching the event, that I vowed to myself to take part next year! For people who live locally, no explanation is needed to explain why this charity needs donations, they are incredible! I’m doing this ride for all four of my grandparents, Molly & Gerald Lonsdale and Jacqueline & Ken Lymn. I’m doing this ride for my extended family to show how much I appreciate their love and support.”
Cyclists were supported by an army of passionate volunteers who generously gave up their Sunday morning to help the event run as safely and smoothly as possible.
Paul Rose, 33 from Paignton volunteered on the registration desk
“Well, if you’re going to get out of bed before dawn on a Sunday, it has to be for an amazing charity like Rowcroft Hospice! This is my first time volunteering at a Rowcroft event and it feels really good knowing you are helping to run an event which raises so much money to support local families. Today has felt so well organised and there is a great atmosphere, as a volunteer you really feel like you are part of something special and giving back to the community.”
Rowcroft’s Head of Fundraising, Rachael Bryett is thrilled with the amount raised for local patients and families in need of Rowcroft’s services.
Rachael said:
“What an amazing Sunday! We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our dedicated volunteers and amazing participants who joined us so early in the morning. We hope that everybody had fun! It takes a community to make a hospice and without your support, we would not be able to continue to provide our services – thank you.”
