Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to announce the appointment of two new non-executive directors to the Board.

Richard Crompton will join on 01 August 2022 and previously served as Chairman of University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust for ten years. He was a police officer for 32 years in London, Devon, Cornwall, Cumbria and Lincolnshire and held national responsibility for policy in relation to vulnerable adults, vulnerable and intimidated witnesses, wildlife and environmental crime and for neighbourhood policing and partnerships. In 2011 he was awarded the Queen’s Police Medical for Distinguished Service.

Richard has also chaired the Adult Safeguarding Boards of Somerset and Wiltshire where he was responsible for commissioning and leading a number of reviews into cases of serious adult abuse. He was the independent chairman of the safeguarding panel for Dimensions, a national provider of personalised social care services for people with learning disabilities and autism.

Richard is particularly focused on partnership working, addressing inequalities and improving services to the most vulnerable.

New non-executive directors join trust board

Siân Walker-McAllister joins the Board in September 2022 as a non-executive director. She is an independent social care consultant, a Registered Social Worker, and an Associate of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services.  A former Director of Adult Social Services, Siân has worked in London, the south west and latterly in Wales.

Siân has over 40 years’ experience in social care and currently chairs two Adult Safeguarding Boards in the south west region, and co-chairs the National Safeguarding Adult Board Chairs’ Network. She is concluding two terms of office as a Commissioner for the Jersey Care Commission in 2023 and has held a number of senior and strategic roles in housing and social care.

Siân is driven by a passion for excellence, ensuring all services to vulnerable people are person-centred, easy to access and importantly promote independence, while ensuring people are safe.

The appointments were approved by the Council of Governors on 17 June 2022.

Sir Richard Ibbotson, Chairman, announced the appointments, saying: “We are delighted to welcome Siân and Richard to our Board and look forward to the breadth of expertise that they will bring to support us in delivering better health and care for all. Having Non-Executive Directors on our Board of this calibre, with such a wealth of relevant experience will be really beneficial.”

Non-Executive Directors at Foundation Trusts are appointed by Governors. Speaking of this appointment, Lead Governor for Torbay and South Devon, Jean Thomas, commented: “We are fortunate to have such a high calibre of Non-Executive Directors on our Board of Directors. Richard Crompton and Siân Walker-McAllister both have a wealth of knowledge about the NHS and are passionate about health and care services. I am certain that they will prove to be valuable assets and vigorous champions of our services in the local community.”

Richard Crompton said: “I am very pleased and privileged to be joining the Board of Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust. The national and local challenges that we face in health and social care are immense, but we have great opportunities to improve the care we provide by working more effectively with partners and by modernising our services. I hope my contribution will help in that great endeavour”.

Siân Walker-McAllister said: “I am delighted to be joining Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust and contributing to developing improved integrated working across health and social care which make a difference to the people of Torbay and South Devon. I am looking forward to working with the Board, Governors, staff and partners in social care and the voluntary sector in supporting the delivery of effective services which people can easily access.”
