With the summer holidays now well and truly underway, and with a lot of us preparing for a bank holiday break.
Highways England have advised motorists to ensure they check their car before they travel.
Campsite Bookings are up
It is official that with the hot weather campsite bookings are up by as much as 5%.
Great news for campsite owners and the local tourism sector.
However, if you are staying home this summer please ensure that you check your car before you travel.
Almost half of all breakdowns are caused by simple mechanical problems that could have been avoided with a few simple checks.
20 Motorists break down everyday
By not checking your vehicle before you set off, you run the risk of becoming one of the 20 motorists that break down everyday because they have simply run out of fuel.
Some problems are related to car tyre pressures, in fact near on a quarter of all breakdowns are related to tyre issues.
Tutorials for the none mechanic
Of course not all of us know what to check for when it comes to ensuring our car is in good order to sustain a long drive.
Personally, we’d advise if you’re not sure take it to your nearest local garage and get them to give it the once over.
Sure it is going cost, but it is far better to be safe than to end up half way down the M5 and break down.
If you feel like taking on a new challenge, ensure you checkout the Highways England five short instructional videos, explaining how to check tyre pressure, tread, oil, water levels and lights.

Go Prepared
As well as ensuring the car is up to standard, ensure you have got enough provisions in the event of a break down.
As a driver you should take:
- A bottle of water before setting out to ensure you stay hydrated
- Plan breaks and leave plenty of time for your journey
- Check the weather forecast for your destination
- Check travel conditions before setting out and where it is safe to do so during your journey
- Ensure you and your car are fit for the journey
