Libraries Unlimited celebrated the official opening of the refurbished Brixham Library on Tuesday 17th December.  The refurbishment has been possible thanks to fundraising from Libraries Unlimited, Friends of Brixham library and developer contributions (Section 106 funding) through Torbay Council.

Special guests including Cllr Christine Carter and Cllr Mike Morey joined Libraries Unlimited Chief Executive Alex Kittow; Julie Harris, a community customer and loyal supporter; and three year old Holly Crabtree, one of our youngest library customer; together with staff members, partners, suppliers and library users to mark the official opening of the new library.

Cabinet Member for Corporate and Community Services, Cllr Christine Carter, said: “Brixham’s newly refurbished library is a fantastic facility for residents in Brixham and I am very pleased to be able to help officially open it.

“This is a great example of what can be achieved when the local community works together and I would particularly like to thank the Friends of Brixham Library for their generosity.”

Brixham Library is one of four libraries in Torbay run by charity Libraries Unlimited, who are also responsible for the running of Devon’s 50 libraries and the mobile library service on behalf of Devon County Council.

Alex Kittow, Chief Executive of Libraries Unlimited said: “We are really proud to officially open the refurbished Brixham Library and to be able to offer this improved library for the people of Brixham and surrounding areas.  I’d like to thank all of those involved in this successful project, including the contractors, Friends of Brixham Library and our staff team.  We’re grateful to our partners and individuals who donate to Libraries Unlimited for enabling us to make these improvements to this library.”

The refurbished library is newly decorated with new shelving, carpets and furniture.  There is a vibrant sea themed Children’s Library on the ground floor and refreshed meeting rooms which are available for hire.  Libraries Unlimited is pleased to present an even more enjoyable and welcoming library for the local community to visit.

“The refurbished library has received extremely positive feedback from our library customers and they are definitely enjoying the new space. This vibrant space is already attracting new customers and businesses are booking the meeting rooms. We are keen to promote that this library is available for the whole community and if anyone is not currently a member you can join for free.  Your free membership gives you access to books, eBooks, audiobooks, magazines and all resources on offer.” said Emma Aydemir, Team Leader at Brixham Library.

Brixham Library is open to the public Monday to Saturday. Full details of library opening times are available at https://www.torbaylibraries.org.uk/web/arena/brixhamlibrary.
